CITY OF BRYAN

YOUTH ADVISORY COMMISSION (YAC)

The City of Bryan Youth Advisory Commission (YAC) serves as an advisor to the Bryan City Council. The commission is in place to provide a voice for the teen community and they advise the council on issues affecting the youth within the City of Bryan. The YAC helps identify issues and concerns that are affecting the youth in the community and they suggest possible ways for the city council to take action pertaining to those issues.

“Helping [youth] tap into their creative potential and allowing them to be able to express their ideas; and then watching those ideas blossom, make working with youth one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

Jose Castro - Program Coordinator

FUNDING USAGE

  • Created a website for their resource center

WHY PARTNER WITH TYAN?

Our goal in collaborating with TYAN is to learn the skills and strategies needed to help our organization reach its maximum potential. We want to achieve a level where we have equal adult-youth collaboration and work together as an organization to help improve our community for everyone

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Creating a resource center for youth who are transitioning out of foster care. This resource center will help prepare foster youth for life as independent adults by helping them find and keep a job, find and keep housing and provide them with skills to help develop them into independent and productive adults. Our resource center will be web-based and we hope to have it in place by 2021.
  • Youth members are mostly responsible for all recruiting and with the help of TYAN, they have begun to set goals and objectives to help the youth in our community.

  • Created their first recruitment video, encouraging more youth to join.
