WELLNESS STARTS NOW: SUPPORTING YOUTH & THE ADULTS WHO GUIDE THEM

August marks more than the end of Summer, it’s a call to action. During National Wellness Month, Texas youth are embracing self-care, building resilience, and shaping a healthier future, starting today.

At the Texas Youth Action Network (TYAN), we believe wellness is more than just avoiding illness—it’s about thriving. This National Wellness Month, we’re highlighting how young people across Texas are cultivating mental, emotional, and physical well-being, and how adults can support them in building lifelong habits for health.

What Is Wellness, Really?

Wellness is a holistic pursuit—an active process of making choices that lead to a fulfilling life. For youth, this means navigating academic pressures, social dynamics, and personal growth in an ever-changing world. Prioritizing wellness during these formative years builds essential life skills and a strong foundation for future success.

According to the Wellness Alliance (2025),  key attributes of wellness include:

• Health

• Meaning

• Safety

• Connection

• Achievement

• Growth

• Resiliency

As the sun dipped low over the calm lake, a young traveler paused on the rugged shoreline, embraced by the fiery tones of fall. Their backpack lay beside them, a quiet witness to the miles already walked. In the stillness, the water became a mirror—reflecting hills, sky, and the quiet strength of someone finding clarity in nature’s embrace. Nearby, the Texas Youth Action Network emblem whispered of purpose and belonging, anchoring this moment of reflection in a larger journey of growth.

Mental Health Matters

Mental health is a cornerstone of overall well-being. Early support can make a lasting impact on a young person’s development.

NAMI Texas – Youth Mental Health Resources:
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Texas offers free, youth-specific resources including:
A Teen & Young Adult HelpLine via call, text, or chat.
Peer support groups for shared experiences and connection.
Mental health education and toolkits.

Self-Care Is Not Selfish

Self-care is essential—not optional. Developing healthy habits early empowers youth to manage stress and lead balanced lives.

Healthy Futures of Texas:
Healthy Futures of Texas offers youth-centered programs that promote:

  • Healthy relationships.
    • Goal setting and communication skills.
    • Positive peer and mentor connections.

In celebration of National Wellness Month, the Texas Youth Action Network invites young changemakers to embrace a holistic approach to self-care. A nourishing plate of eggs, veggies, and cheese encourages mindful eating. Nearby, a water bottle and dumbbells rest beneath a canopy of trees, symbolizing the balance of hydration, movement, and nature. As the moon rises, it gently reminds us that rest is just as vital—completing the trio of habits that fuel a thriving, resilient life.

Routines Build Resilience

Consistency provides structure and predictability, especially important for youth. Healthy routines support time management, reduce stress, and reinforce positive habits.

Positive Youth Development (PYD) Framework:
The Texas Department of State Health Services and TYAN promotes the PYD framework through:

  • Life skill development.
    • Mentorship and adult support.
    • Community engagement and civic responsibility.

Youth Prevention Programs:
Youth Prevention Programs help youth avoid risky behaviors and build resilience through:

  • Community involvement.
    • Skill-building activities.
    • Supportive environments.

Austin Youth Riverwatch:
Spending time outdoors enhances physical and emotional health. Austin Youth Riverwatch combines environmental education with outdoor exploration, helping students:

  • Monitor water quality.
    • Build leadership skills.
    • Connect with nature.

Wellness Is a Journey
