BREAKING THE ICE: VIRTUAL ICEBREAKERS

WHY AN ICEBREAKER?

Is an icebreaker right for my group? Often times, the answer is yes! Icebreakers are great for welcoming new members and creating a positive, comfortable environment. Since most social interactions are virtual for now, go ahead and ease the socialization process of your group – use a virtual icebreaker.

PLANNING YOUR VIRTUAL ICEBREAKER

There are any few things to keep in mind when beginning a meeting with an icebreaker. Taking into consideration the following will ensure a smoother experience.

Prepare your icebreaker in advance – Icebreakers can turn from fun to awkward if not planned. When leading an icebreaker, make sure to have a plan in motion. Write out all prompts and questions before your meeting begins. This way, the conversation will go smoothly and stay on track at all times. Always inform your participants if any equipment (pens, paper, etc.) is required.

Be mindful of your time – While icebreakers are a great addition to a meeting, they should not be the main focus. Decide what topics will be discussed that meeting and how much time is needed for each topic. The time remaining in the meeting can be used for your icebreaker

POTENTIAL TOPICS FOR YOUR NEXT ICEBREAKER!

Agree or disagree – This can be a great way to begin a conversation on tough topics or to get to know new members. Write a list of statements about your topic and ask your youth to raise a finger based on if they agree or disagree. Have them raise:

  • One finger if they strongly disagree
  • Two fingers if they disagree
  • Three fingers if they feel neutral

  • Four fingers if they agree

  • Five fingers if they strongly agree

This activity does not need any equipment from your youth and can be adapted to use for all ages.

Whiteboard game – Zoom has a special feature called Whiteboard, which allows participants to create drawings. For instructions on how to access the whiteboard feature, click here. The Whiteboard is a great way for talking about issues through art. You can play a game of Pictionary with your group or ask them to respond to prompts.

Introduce your pet – COVID-19 has everyone spending most of their time at home. A good way to break the ice with new members and to is to ask your members to introduce their pets! This is a simple way to get a casual dialog started and ease into more serious topics.
