Celebrating Youth Leadership During National Volunteer Week

April’s National Volunteer Week is a statewide and national moment to celebrate service and to recognize the leadership, skills, and confidence young people build through meaningful volunteer experiences.

Across Texas, youth are stepping up to make a meaningful difference, and nonprofits across the state rely on their service to enhance and sustain community efforts.

Why Volunteering Matters for Teens Colorful paper letters spelling “volunteer” are pinned with bright pushpins to a corkboard, creating a playful, handmade look against a textured brown background.

Trusted adults and youth development organizations are essential in creating these opportunities and helping young people reflect on their contributions.

Simple Ways Trusted Adults Can Support Youth Service

Texas Youth Action Network Icon. The shape of Texas made up of multi-color human like figure heads and hands thrown up in the air.  Connect youth to accessible volunteer opportunities that align with their interests and abilities. Helping students identify their strengths can make it easier to connect them with local or regional nonprofits.

  • To support this process, TYAN offers a FREE Youth Soft Skills Assessment that sparks meaningful reflection and dialogue while helping youth build vital soft skills. Facilitators can revisit the assessment over time to track growth and adapt programming.
  • Once strengths are identified, visit Volunteer Match to connect youth with organizations seeking help in areas that align with their skills and interests.

Invite teens to help plan projects, make decisions, or lead parts of an organizational event.

Use reflection activities during Youth-Adult Partnership (YAP) meetings to help youth recognize and articulate the skills they are building.

Community Partner Spotlight: Generation SERVE

One example of youth‑centered service in action is Generation SERVE, a Central Texas nonprofit that empowers young people to become active community participants.
